Our Mainfreight motto rang true when Owner Driver Egon Chiemel made Woodend resident Liam Ryan’s day, when he took him and his respite carer Kathryn Gibson out on his truck for the day.
The outing was arranged by Maddie from Mainfreight Christchurch, who went beyond call of duty to give a nearly 17 year old autistic boy a wonderful first time experience.
Liam knew that he was going to get a surprise but had no more details until Kathryn told him to go out and wait at the gate. A Mainfreight truck pulled up and Liam’s excitement grew.
They drove around the empty streets of the red zone of Kaiapoi, then had a pick up at the Kaiapoi Salvation Army shop. Liam donned a Mainfreight jacket and he set off with Egon to uplift the freight. On returning to the truck Egon showed him how to open the truck curtains and load the freight on board. It was great for Liam to be able to participate, posing as the Mainfreight driver and he enjoyed every moment.
The team headed back to Kaiapoi, down the motorway and over the Waimakariri Bridge. Egon told them about his job, and his truck, his family, a little about the Mainfreight philosophy, and also that insurance premiums had tripled since the earthquakes. Kathryn said “amongst other things, Liam remembered the bit about the lady who worked at night driving the forklift!”
Liam was delighted when Egon gave him an early Christmas present from Maddie and the team – a Mainfreight beanie, cap, bum bag, calendar and our latest magazine and annual report.
Thanks Maddie and Egon for being the special people in a special company and for making Liam’s day.

We have implemented strategies including installing rain gardens, utilising rainwater, recycling greywater for truck washing and using solar power including 690 solar panels in our Hamilton facility, making it one of the largest private solar installations in Australasia.
You would have noticed there are more electric vehicles (EV) on the road than ever before. More EV charging zones being installed at local petrol stations and ever increasing hype around EV technology. There are about 1.3 million electric vehicles on the road around the world and the era of the electric vehicles is here. Over the years, we have implemented hybrid fleets for team members on the road, now advancing our commitment one step further. After our team trialled various electric cars, we have welcomed a fully electric vehicle with zero emission to the team. The 2017 Nissan Leaf supplied by GVI Electric and Fleetpartner.
How the Nissan Leaf works,
The fully electric car runs off high capacity batteries which are charged through the bonnet. There are two ways to charge. The first is a portable charger which runs from a three point plug. This is considered a ‘drip feed charger’, well suited to overnight charging as it need longer time to charge fully. The second is a much more heavy duty charger which is what you often see at charging stations and most recently installed at our Railway Branch. This fast charger can charge 30% every 10 minutes charging using our depot charging stations.
The maximum distance Leaf can drive between charging is about 180/200km.
We are committed to minimising our environmental impact where practicable. Each region has its own uniqueness and characteristics and as time and technology advances, one day we may perhaps be able to expand our fleets across the business.
Keep an eye out for our new and expanding EV fleet on the road.

This article explains different aspects you need to take into account before taking your next step.
What best suits your business?
Here are a few things to consider when deciding on your warehousing options.

Cost – The cost on leasing or buying a warehouse, equipment and technology can be reduced utilising third party’s existing operation. You may want to set up your warehouse from scratch and stock control systems to have a full control but this cost can be substantial. 3PL warehouses have already made this capital investment. A 3PL provider can help you design a warehousing plan that will save your bills. DIY can be more cost effective depending on the size and number of orders to control internally.
Time –Experts with years of experience can cut this time for you and arrange what suits your business the best. You will have more time to build close relationship with your customers, invest to become more competitive in the market or anything that is more important in growing your business. You can also save time in warehousing by having your team focusing solely on your customer and no one else by DIY warehousing, too.
Experienced Team – Having the right team is important as much as having the right tools to use. Passing responsibility to experts with in-depth understanding of the industry will allow you to be worry-free. Skip the whole process of employing and training new people so you can fully focus on your core business. On the other hand, as long as your team are trained to manage warehousing and process what needs to be done for the customer, you will be fine.
Volume/Growth/Scalability – The beauty of DIY is designing everything to your taste. You have full control to decide how to layout and size your warehouse and have your stocks in front of your eyes. However, if your business is continuing to expand or if you find your business has big peaks and troughs, you will need a warehouse that can easily adjust appropriately. A 3PL provider can accommodate the changing size of your business at a competitive rate. You won’t need to worry about how to make use of empty shelves or squeezing in additional products. If your warehouse needs to be located at another region or country to be more efficient, checking multiple warehouse solutions that various 3PL providers can service might make your business more competitive.

So, what method should you choose?
It is crucial for you to understand and measure the uniqueness of your business as well as what your business’ future goals are. By comparing pros and cons you will be able to make the right decision for you and your business.
Contact our warehousing team now to talk about your business’ 3PL needs.

Wayne was recognised with the Outstanding Community Service Award from The Life Education Trust for his 13 years of volunteer work in moving mobile classroom for kids with his 40ft semi school trailer.
He has dedicated his own time and cost to encourage generations to embrace positive choices for a healthy mind and body. Last year, he made it possible for 6,000 kids to take part in lessons with Life Education’s specialist health teacher over 27 different schools.
He said it does require a lot of time and effort but the reward is worth it. “When I arrive at school, the kids are so happy. Seeing the look on their face makes my day, you cannot buy that with money”, said Goodwin.
2017 marks 10 years partnership between Mainfreight and The Life Education Trust. We will continue to support children’s education and volunteers like Wayne to make our community better. You can visit, The Life Education Trust to find out more.

IDEA (Intellectual Disability Empowerment in Action) Day started back at Mainfreight Southdown Lane over 20 years ago when Bryan Curtis wanted to do something special for his son.
Each Branch have held a long standing relationship with local IHC groups for many years bringing back our old friends as well as new ones to the event every year.
Held at our transport site our team organised some activities for the day. We invited over 100 guests including caregivers to make it a fun day for everyone. The depot was divided into few sections where guests can play safely. Assisted by our team and truck drivers, there were countless truck rides going around the depot and just like from the old movies, muscle car rides drifting away. Snacks and barbeque lunch was on the table for everyone to recharge for another round of fun in the afternoon. We all got into a long line before end of the day when Mr Whippy arrived at depot just in time, too. The depot was filled with joy and laughs of people to take another good memory with Mainfreight.
