The Ride Along
On The Road Again
This weekend I got the opportunity to tag along with an Owner Driver on his run from Christchurch to Timaru. I earned my ticket to ride with Russell by helping him load him offload his unit, and securing freight.
Could I be an Owner Driver?
The seven hour trip gave me a chance to pick Russell's brain and learn a bit about what it's like to be an Owner Driver. I got a chance to see both the Ashburton and Timaru Mainfreight depots for the first time, and also got to meet some of the team down there.
The Art of Loading
The experience has provided me with a better appreciation for what Owner Drivers do and a better understanding of the life of a consignment outside of Logistics. I even got to deliver an order I had picked and dispatched myself. As a Logistic boy I also gained a better appreciation for what my brothers and sisters in Transport do. After loading your first B-train, you quickly realise that loading is actually an art form and the good blokes at tranposrt are artists dealing with the most awkward, irregular and impossible freight – and making it work! All in all it was a worth while experience, one which I’m definatelly looking forward to doing again.
